Ever find yourself trying to defend who you are with all that you have within you. Ever find yourself trying to be someone who you are not? Ever find yourself just being completely dishonest about the state that you’re in? What is it about us that makes us often times try to put on masks? You know what they used to call Greek actors who wore masks when performing in plays back in the day? Hupokrites! No i didn’t misspell it, hupokrites is the Greek word where hypocrite comes from. The definition is an actor playing a role, someone wearing a mask to misrepresent reality. See hupokrites were people who acted in plays as a character but once their performance was done, they snapped back to reality. What is it that we often have to hide? What is it that makes us have to play this alternate role? See we learn a lot from our forefather/mother who had a similar issue.
Lets go back to the beginning of time when Adam and Eve were in the garden walking and talking with God. After the fall, what happened to them? The bible says in Gen 3:8 “And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.” I have always thought that Adam and Eve were ridiculous for trying to hide in the bushes from God. You can almost get the image of them playing hide and go seek. The only difference is this was no game. They had to face the fact that they just disobeyed God and that their would be consequences. Maybe its time for us to realize that we have been playing the same game. We have been putting on masks for too long. We have allowed people to see this image of someone, who has it all put together but the reality is we are only fooling ourselves. God sees the heart. He sees the inner depths. Jeremiah the prophet said it best, You, O Lord, know me; You have seen me, And You have tested my heart toward You.” See imagine if God left Adam and Eve hiding in the bushes what would have happened? I imagine they would have hid there for as long as they could and probably at some point come out and admit what they had done. That’s what needs to happen with you and I today. We need to come out of the bushes and acknowledge to God that we are not who we say we are. He already knows. So why fool ourselves?
The fear of taking off the masks or acknowledging who we are is it hurts. It stinks! We have to face who we are, admit our faults and face the reality that we don’t have everything put together. When we take the masks off we have to look in the mirror and realize that we don’t like the way we look and thats the temptation of putting the mask back on. But if we look at ourselves in the way that Christ looks at us, we will see the beautiful amazing creation that God called VERY GOOD! We are able to see ourselves through God’s eyes when we see the incarnation. Oreintal Christianity sees the incarnation and its purpose as a relationship taking place in a hospital, man is sick, sin is just part of the sickness, Christ is the Physician who heals every part of this sickness (including death, which is the culmination of the sickness). The transaction between God and man is therapeutic. God wants us to come to Him with our sickness and masks because it is then He can give us the Remedy, Himself. Approach this New Year with the mask off because it is then you can live the way God created you to live, free.
